Duck
Flats was a swampy location outside of Anchorage, Alaska
which was a popular place for hunters. As beautiful an
area as it was, it also smelled; I mean it really had an
odor about it!
Each
day we would leave Anchorage, and go by helicopter or
float plane to our location for that day. Alaska has
locations as exotic, and beautiful as any I've
seen.
One day
we shot aboard the Ocean Ranger, what was then the
world's largest semi-submersible oil drilling rig. We
were given a tour which included seeing the escape
submarines in the event of a calamity. Several years
later a calamity occurred; actually it was a disaster.
The Ocean Ranger sank in a storm, and all lives were lost
(79 men).
